PEOPLE AND THEIR MOVEMENT | Nishanth | Hanzal | Udayshankar

In the wake of the pandamic People need more space to effectively incorporate social distancing and giving more space does not necessarily mean people can keep their distance and the most importantly Pedestrian movement is not a static event. It is dynamic. That means People’s movement has to be better planned and streamlined to effectively incorporate social distancing without people evading other’s personal spaces.

The turbulent movement will compromise all safety standards irrespective of the space provided for movement and circulation. A complete investigation of the standard width of circulation spaces must be put forward and these standards have to change so that life can go on even during such a breakout And therefore should be reworked

The important thing to consider is that the Post pandemic is also pre-pandemic as another pandemic is inevitable. And therefore every aspect of our daily life should be revisited and reworked to prepare yourself for the upcoming future.

Some of the measures that can be considered are:

  • Use of one-ways and lanes

  • Circulation should  be kept in one direction

  • separation of entries and exits

  • Segregation of people based on their destination

  • Multiple pathways for multiple destinations

  • Use of color and materials to make pathways and social distances between them

  • Use of plants and trees between lanes to separate them.

Movement and circulation in post pandemic era can be crucial in preventing the spread of the disease and hence comprises of goals such as;

  • No contact between people

  • Need for instant sanitisation of public places as people use it

  • Keep the environment safe so as to accommodate people without risk

  • And still provide a good experience for users.

To elaborate

Contact between people can be avoided by giving narrow pathways and allowing only a specific number of people at a time and Crowding should be avoided in any case and no queues must be followed without proper distancing.

Services must be provided on spot to people instead of making them wait in long queues By using online apps and digital interaction huge queues can be avoided and a proper chart can be constructed.

In case of Pathways, it should be kept contact free from hand rails and other other frequently used elements. The pathways should be coated with easily cleanable surface coating so as to avoid damage. Coloured pathways for staff and customers can be segregated so as to avoid congestion and contact.Pathways should be sanitised in regular intervals to avoid contamination and modern technologies such as robotic sanitisation can be used.
